YouTube Music, Premium now has a total of over 3 Crore subscribers

The paid subscriber base of YouTube Music and YouTube Premium reached three Crore subscribers, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet, said when he announced the company’s quarterly results. The latest number shows an increase from the two crore-paid subscribers announced late last year. Along with the growth of YouTube Music and Premium, Pichai mentioned that YouTube TV has passed the 30 lakh subscriber mark. Launched in April 2017 with the aim of providing a cable cutting experience, the television service is currently limited to the US market.

Said Pichai during the alphabet Call for prizes that there were over 3.5 million users on YouTube Music and YouTube Premium combined. This includes 50 Lakh users getting free trials of both services that launched in India last March.

YouTube music is available at Rs. 99 per month while YouTube Premium is offered at a monthly fee from Rs. 129. There are also discounts available for those opting for family and student plans.

The coronavirus outbreak appears to have helped YouTube significantly in expanding its paid services in global markets. Pichai noted that “as a sign of the times”, daily views of guided meditation videos on YouTube have increased 40 percent since March, while DIY face mask tutorials have been viewed over a billion times.

“People come to YouTube for entertainment, information, and a chance to learn something new,” said Pichai.

YouTube isn’t the only one making the most of the ongoing pandemic. Competing platforms like Amazon Prime Video have also seen rapid growth in recent months as people stay in the house with their families and loved ones. Amazon said in its quarterly results that the number of Prime members who stream videos increased 80 percent year over year in the third quarter.

“We saw it as a very significant acquisition channel for new Prime members,” said Brian Olsavsky, Amazon’s chief financial officer said.

Similarly, Spotify, the Sweden-based platform that competes against YouTube Music and Amazon Prime Music, reported that its paid subscribers grew 27 percent in the third quarter to 11.4 million year over year.
