You can now open and edit Microsoft Office attachments directly from Gmail

Google makes it easier for its workspace apps to work with Microsoft Office. Users can now open and edit Office attachments sent via Gmail directly in documents, sheets or slides without first having to save them to the drive. According to Google, the new update makes it easier for users to reply to email threads with Office files. Additionally, Google makes it easy to create and edit documents that require multi-sided alignment in documents.

Google’s new Microsoft Office Collaboration features have started rolling out to authorized users. Previously, users had to save a file to Drive before they could use Google’s Office editing features. An edit icon is now displayed directly in the attachment with which the file can be opened directly in documents, sheets or slides. The original file format is also retained.

There are also new options to reply to after opening an Office file in Gmail, including Answer with this file and Open the original message.

This feature is available to users with Google Workspace Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, and Enterprise Plus. It will also be available to G Suite Basic, Business, Education, Enterprise for Education users, and nonprofit customers. Google Workspace Essentials and Enterprise Essentials customers are not eligible for this update.

Announcing a second update that better integrates Google Workspace apps with Microsoft Office, Google said It was important that files and documents look consistent across applications. The new enhancements make it easier for users to create and share documents from Google Docs with wide tables, charts, graphs, and images. Users can edit, import, and export Microsoft Word documents that contain both portrait and landscape pages. You can also change the page orientation of documents in Google Docs to make room for content like tables and images that need additional horizontal space.

The update has currently been rolled out for some users. Google announces that it will have a broader rollout starting January 5, 2021 and will be available to users with Google Personal Accounts, nonprofit customers, and customers with Google Workspace Essentials, Business Starter, Business Standard, Business Plus, and Enterprise Essentials.
