Wistron estimates over Rs. 437 crore loss in employee violence at the Karnataka plant

Wistron Corporation, headquartered in Taiwan, said it suffered a loss of Rs 437.40
Crowns in violence at its facility unleashed by a section of workers over wage problems at its plant in the Kolar district of Karnataka.

A large number of employees allegedly committed arson, loot and violence at the Narasapura manufacturing facility in Wistron on Saturday over some wage-related issues, police said
had said.

They damaged the building, damaged vehicles, set them on fire, damaged expensive equipment such as machines and computers.

In his complaint to the Vemagal Police Station, the company’s executive director, TD Prashanth, indicated this position
Appliances, cell phones, manufacturing machinery and related equipment valued at Rs.412.5 billion were lost.

Infrastructure valued at 10 billion rupees, cars and golf carts valued at 60 billion rupees, smartphones and other devices valued at 1.5 billion rupees were among those stolen
or lost.

In his complaint, he stated that 5,000 contract workers and around 2,000 unknown culprits committed the vandalism at the factory.

Police have arrested 149 people and arrested a few others so far. Meanwhile, Wistron India’s executive director Sudipto Gupta said in a statement that the company is in a state
deeply shocked by the events in his Narasapura facility.

“We comply with the law and support the authorities in their investigations. The safety and well-being of our team members are always our top priority,” Gupta said in a statement to the media.

The Karnataka government not only condemned the incident, but also ensured safety and strict measures against those involved in arson and violence.

Karnataka political parties sought a thorough investigation into the violence at Wistron’s manufacturing site on Sunday when they raised concerns about the potential impact on the state’s investment-friendly image.
