WhatsApp Disappearing Messages Feature Launched: Everything You Need To Know

WhatsApp has officially announced that it will introduce a new message disappearing feature through an update rolled out worldwide this month. However, the details of the new feature have been released since earlier this week after noticing a FAQ page created by WhatsApp. Snapchat’s long-awaited short-lived messaging feature was first spotted in a WhatsApp beta last month. Users can turn on an option for one-to-one and group chats that deletes new messages after seven days.

‘Disappearing Messages’ has started Roll out starting today and will be available on Android, iOS and Linux-based KaiOS devices as well as WhatsApp web and desktop platforms from the end of this month. Earlier this week, WhatsApp detailed how the new “Disappearing Messages” feature can be enabled / disabled on different devices and published frequently asked questions about using it on one device Support page.

The “Disappearing Messages” feature in WhatsApp is also different from the feature in Telegram. While users can use Telegram to determine the length of time before messages in a chat disappear, messages sent to a chat on WhatsApp disappear after seven days. Snapchat, on the other hand, deletes Snaps after opening, unopened Snaps sent to a group chat within 24 hours, and all other unopened Snaps within 30 days.

WhatsApp says it starts at seven days as it seems like a reasonable window for its users to end a particular conversation and give them the reassurance that the conversations are not permanent. “We start with 7 days because we believe conversations are not permanent while they remain practical so you won’t forget what you were talking about. The shopping list or business address you received a few days ago will . ” Be there while you need to and then disappear when you don’t, “the company said in a statement.

The “Disappearing Messages” function must be activated separately for each chat window – individual or group calls – and can be accessed by clicking on the name of the individual contact or group in WhatsApp. When this option is enabled, new messages sent by a user will be hidden for the selected contacts after seven days. However, the preview of disappearing messages may appear in notifications until WhatsApp is opened on the receiving devices. Disappearing messages that are forwarded to a new chat window with the option disabled are also not removed. If a user replies to a disappearing message, the quoted text might stay in the chat even after seven days.

Users who receive the messages can still copy the text and take screenshots of the messages within seven days. Disappearing messages also end up in user backups, but are deleted after the user restores messages from them. Given that there are many ways to keep chats shared by disappearing messages, it seems like a conversation deletion option rather than an information sharing feature that is automatically deleted.

In addition to Snapchat, Telegram and now WhatsApp, Signal and Facebook Messenger, which now have a disappearance mode, offer other messaging apps with similar functions.
