The Steam year in review for 2020 shows that compared to 2019, 21.4 percent more games were purchased and the total playing time doubled in 2020. As the coronavirus pandemic forced people to stay in their homes for most of the past year, more and more people tended to play video games, be it on their smartphones, consoles or PCs. Valve’s year in review on Steam shows just that, along with some interesting stats that show a significant increase in engagement on the platform.
The Review of 2020 For Steam shows, there were 120 million active players per month on the platform. With that many gamers playing video games, the total investment time increased 50.7 percent from 2019. 21.4 percent more games were purchased on Steam in 2020, and 2.6 million first-time purchases were made monthly.
Steam had 62.6 million active players per day worldwide in 2020, with the highest number of concurrent players reaching 24.8 million.
There were the usual multiple seasonal sales that Steam had organized over the last year, and the main ones – summer, fall and winter – were “record breaking in terms of revenue generated for developers and publishers” according to the official blog post. Compared to the 2019 winter sales, the number of games in 2020 increased 36 percent, grossing more than $ 100,000 (about 73 lakh).
To ensure the visibility of games in the Steam catalog, the platform organized the Steam Game Festival: Spring Edition, during which 559,000 demo activations were carried out for a few dozen demos. At the Steam Game Festival: Summer Edition, 4 million customers have registered for over 900 demos. At the Steam Game Festival: Autumn Edition, 5.1 million demos were finally activated.
Last year, Steam also launched the Steam Points program, which rewards users for buying games and interacting with the community. To date, 99 million items, including animated backgrounds, avatars, frames, and more, have been redeemed by 15.5 million users.
At SteamVR, the platform saw 71 percent more revenue and 30 percent more playtime for VR games. There have been 104 million SteamVR sessions with 1.7 million users experiencing SteamVR for the first time.
