Vipre is a cybersecurity company that offers a wide range of software solutions for various security needs. One of these products is the Vipre Internet Shield VPN VPN service, which can be purchased as a standalone solution or as part of the Ultimate Security package.
Unlike most VPNs that you can purchase as monthly subscriptions, Vipre doesn’t offer such an option for its Internet Shield. You can only choose between the 1-year subscription for USD 60 (equivalent to USD 5 / month), the 2-year subscription for USD 114 (equivalent to USD 4.75 / month), and the 3-year plan for USD 162 ( corresponds to 4.5 USD / month). Regardless of the subscription, you can decide whether you want recurring or one-time payments.
A Vipre Internet Shield VPN account is enough to cover up to 10 devices at the same time, which is just enough for a household or a small office. Accepted payment methods are credit cards, PayPal and bank transfer.
While most security products come with a free trial, Vipre doesn’t have one for its VPN. Instead, if you are not completely satisfied with the product, you may be eligible for a 30-day money back guarantee. We tested this claim and received our refund quickly with no questions asked.
While Vipre’s VPN product can give you online privacy, it’s still just a side-effect of the top antivirus / internet security event. This is why it sometimes feels unpolished and is missing some key features. You won’t get that feeling with the elite ExpressVPN platform, nor will Vipre give you access to thousands of servers like NordVPN does.
And let’s not forget Surfshark or CyberGhost, which both offer a more advanced platform and lower prices. Additionally, in addition to supporting torrenting, all of these key industry players also provide access to popular geo-restricted streaming platforms.
The ability to provide access to localized libraries of popular streaming services such as Netflix and BBC iPlayer in regions where such content is not available is valued in the VPN business. Vipre Internet Shield VPN is mainly focused on protecting your privacy on the internet, unfortunately Netflix or BBC iPlayer cannot be unblocked.
about the company
Vipre operates in Florida, USA and offers access to 80 servers in more than 50 countries worldwide. While this is a small number of servers, they are well distributed around the world, even in countries like Nigeria, the United Arab Emirates, South Africa, Peru, Colombia, and others where not many VPNs have servers.
Data protection and encryption
Vipre’s VPN service provides PPTP, L2TP / IPSec, OpenVPN (UDP and TCP), IPSec and IKEv2 connection protocols depending on the device used. For example, the Windows and Mac apps use the OpenVPN protocol, the Android version the IKEv2 protocol, and the iOS counterpart IKEv2 and IPSec. All use 128-bit SSL encryption and a NAT firewall is provided on all servers.
As an additional security mechanism in the event that the VPN connection fails, Vipre offers a so-called kill switch, but only on Windows and Mac devices. If the connection is lost, a kill switch intervenes and blocks all of your internet access, preventing sensitive information from falling into the wrong hands.
You can even enable the Block LAN Traffic feature to block all local network traffic in addition to internet traffic once you are disconnected from the VPN. Users can also select different automatic options for different types of connections – unsecured WiFi connection, any internet connection, and never – manually enable.
Otherwise, we are not told much about the VPN’s no-logging policy on the website VIPRE’s Internet Shield VPN does not track, store or spy on your browsing data while you are connected to our VPN. Your browsing activity stays safe and private in our VPN. “
The same feeling can be found in the provider’s data protection regulations. To date, there has been no independent review of these claims so we have no choice but to trust Vipre not to log sensitive information, which could be difficult given its location (US).
We also do not recommend torrenting as there is no information about it on the website and customer support did not respond to the request.
Vipre’s Internet Shield VPN offers native apps for iOS, Windows, Mac and Android. The Android app has only been rated by five users so far and has 3 stars (out of 5). It was last updated on November 18, 2019 and installed by over 1,000 users. As for his iOS counterpartIt has a solid score of 4.2 stars as rated by six users.
Vipre has a section of its customer support website dedicated solely to Internet Shield VPN, which is divided into five categories: Getting Started, Basics, Manage, Resources, and What’s New. There is also a small FAQ page.
If you cannot find a satisfactory answer to your question on the website, the next logical step is to contact customer support directly via the web form or email. Unfortunately, there is no live chat option so you will need to equip yourself with a lot of patience. We are still waiting for an answer to our request.
Speed and experience
Using Vipre Internet Shield VPN is easy with beautifully designed apps, an intuitive user interface, and simple settings. Connections are established within seconds by double-clicking the server of your choice.
We tested these servers on a 75 Mbit / s connection. Our first choice was the server marked “Best Available”, at this point Belgrade, Serbia. The download speeds were amazing – 48.67 Mbps. London, UK gave us an excellent 28.06 Mbps.
We then decided to move a little further afield to the North American continent, where a server in Denver, USA, announced a lower but very acceptable 8.15 Mbit / s. Finally, we wanted to see what a more exotic location would fare, so we connected to a server in Mumbai, India. Surprisingly, at a solid 7.97 Mbps, it wasn’t much worse than in the US.
Vipre’s Internet Shield VPN protects your privacy in the online world as you can surf with perfect anonymity. However, it does not allow torrenting, nor can it be used to access the region-locked content of today’s popular streaming services, which is why it is an industry leader like ExpressVPN may be a better choice, even if at a higher price.
