Vi became the fastest 4G operator in India, followed by Airtel, Jio: Ookla

Vi (formerly known as Vodafone Idea) became the fastest mobile operator over 4G in India in the third quarter of this year, while Jio topped the list of 4G availabilities among the top service providers, according to a report by network analyst company Ookla. Data speeds vary between the country’s largest cities, according to the report, and Hyderabad had the fastest download experience over cellular networks in the third quarter. Ookla found that the average download speed over cellular networks in the country increased 11.6 percent year over year.

According to the report released from Ookla, Vi had an average download speed of 13.74 Mbps and an average upload speed of 6.19 Mbps in the third quarter. Airtel followed Vi with an average download speed of 13.58 Mbit / s and an average upload speed of 4.15 Mbit / s. Jio came third with an average download speed of 9.71 Mbps and an upload speed of 3.41 Mbps in the third quarter.

Based on the data captured using the Speedtest app on Android, Ookla mentioned that India led 4G availability among the largest South Asian countries in the third quarter, with 94.7 percent of the locations tested having 4G available. Bangladesh and Pakistan followed India with 4G availability rates of 78.6 and 72.9 percent, respectively.

India’s growth is mainly driven by Jio, who achieved 99.7 percent availability of 4G in the third quarter. Airtel followed with 4G, which was available at 98.7 percent of the locations tested during the same period, while Vi India took third place with 91.1 percent.

While India led the way in 4G availability, it lagged Pakistan behind Pakistan in average download speeds over cellular networks in the third quarter, according to Ookla. Pakistan had 39.7 percent faster download speeds compared to India, while Bangladesh ranked third for download speed and second for upload speed. This means that the average upload speed in India was even slower than in Bangladesh – at a rate of 4.18 Mbps.

Even so, average mobile download speeds in India improved between the third quarter of last year and this year. However, Pakistan saw its download speeds increase by 24.1 percent over the same period, according to the report.

“Upload speeds were largely unchanged in the largest countries in South Asia, and only Pakistan showed a slight improvement over the previous year,” Ookla said.

India ranked 131st in the Ookla Speedtest Global Index for mobile internet speeds in September with an average mobile download speed of 12.07 Mbit / s. The country’s neighbors were at the top of the list, China in second place, Sri Lanka in 102nd place and even Pakistan in 116th place and Nepal in 117th place.
