The pandemic has closed concert halls in much of the world, but that hasn’t stopped music theater lovers from flexing their creative muscles – at TikTok, of course.
A crowdsourced musical based on the 2007 Disney Pixar animated film Ratatouille is set to hit the virtual stage after thousands of TikTok developers released original songs, dances, sets, fixtures and puppets in the content sharing app to have.
It all started when New York schoolteacher Emily Jacobsen released an ode to Remy, the movie’s protaganist, who sets an unlikely course as the rat-to-cook.
The power of its viral core of an idea developed into an organically grown, full-fledged show: Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical.
Seaview, a Tony Award-winning theater production company, is partnering with TikTok and TodayTix to stream the show online for three days beginning Jan. 1. The proceeds go to the Actors Fund.
Viewers can purchase a ticket by paying anywhere from USD 5 (around Rs. 400) to USD 50 (around Rs. 4,000).
“SOOOO wild!” Jacobsen tweeted. “We did it: A” ratatousical “is coming on January 1st, 2021!”
It’s unclear exactly who will be involved in the final piece, although artists with actual Broadway credits are supposed to participate.
Which songs will cut the final show will also come as a surprise, but the original Ode to Remy is sure to come out, with other options like “Tango for Colette and Linguini”, “Trash is our Treasure” and “Anyone Can” Cook’.
“A love of the performing arts is expressed in Ratatouille-inspired TikToks by theater lovers around the world,” said Joseph Benincasa, director of the Actors Fund, in a statement.
He said the show “will bring joy to art lovers far and wide this holiday season, while also helping to raise much-needed funding for those in need in our entertainment and performing arts community.”
