The new sci-fi film from Ex Machina Director finds cast, studio: report

Alex Garland – the writer and director best known for Ex Machina and Netflix’s annihilation – has reportedly made his next sci-fi movie: Men. It will likely play Jessie Buckley, who starred in Charlie Kaufman’s Netflix film I’m Thinking of Ending Things, and Rory Kinnear, his latest role in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (available from Disney + Hotstar in India) was. Men is about a young woman (Buckley) who goes on a solo vacation in the English countryside after the death of her former husband.

Deadline brings the word of Garland’s next film. As on all previous occasions, Garland will write – the script is already done – and direct MenProduced by Oscar winner A24, where Garland started out with Ex Machina. Garland’s frequent collaborator Scott Rudin will return to DNA as a producer alongside Eli Bush and Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich.

Garland most recently delivered the science fiction thriller miniseries Devs (on Hulu in the US and Disney + Hotstar in India). Men will be its first full-length project since Annihilation in 2018, sold by Paramount Pictures to Netflix (in all markets except the US, Canada and China) because the studio was concerned about its commercial success. Predictably, Annihilation bombed at the box office. Garland was disappointed with the Netflix sale. under note that they “made the film for the cinema”.

Garland should have a more personable partner in A24, which gave Ex Machina a worldwide theatrical release, although it’s worth noting that A24 has a deal with Apple TV +. However, the deadline report does not mention that Apple is involved Menwhich suggests Garland’s next film will (most likely) be in theaters if they’re still around once COVID-19 is under control.

Buckley had a full 2020 with five releases including the “I Think of the End of Things” mentioned above. She was last seen on Fargo season four (available on Amazon Prime Video in India). Buckley will next appear in the National Theater’s Romeo and Juliet for PBS and Sky Arts by Deadline and in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter, based on Elena Ferrante’s novel of the same name.

Penny Dreadful: City of Angels was the only 2020 release for Kinnear, next to be featured in the April 2021 Bond film No Time to Die, in which he repeats his role as M Chief of Staff Bill Tanner.
