Star Wars is expanding with two new films and four new series

The next Star Wars movie is called Rogue Squadron. It is headed by Patty Jenkins from Wonder woman and will be released in December 2023, announced Disney and Lucasfilm. In addition, Lucasfilm has introduced four new Star Wars series: Ahsoka, Lando, Rangers of the New Republic and Star Wars: Visions; and an animated film: A Droid Story. Additionally, Hayden Christensen will return as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader on Obi Wan Kenobi. Last, Andor is the title for the Rogue One prequel series, and Leslye Headland’s female mystery thriller is called The Acolyte.

Rogue Squadron will introduce a new generation of Starfighter pilots who earn their wings and risk their lives in a high-speed, cross-border thrill, transporting the saga to a future era for the galaxy. It will be the next Star Wars Big Screen Adventure, released on December 22nd, 2023. That means Taika Waititi’s Star Wars film, which Disney has also confirmed, won’t be out until December 2025.

Ahsoka will of course follow Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson, who made her live-action debut in Season 2 of The Mandalorian in late November. Dave Filoni will write Ahsokaand Executive Produce alongside Mandalorian creator and showrunner Jon Favreau.

Filoni and Favreau are also behind Rangers of the New Republic, another live-action series set in The Mandalorian’s timeline, intersecting with future stories and culminating in a climatic story event. This sounds like a Marvel’s The Defenders and could bring in characters from any Star Wars series.

Lando is developed by Justin Simien, creator of Netflix’s Dear White People. Disney calls it a series of events. It will no doubt focus on Lando Calrissian. There’s no mention of Donald Glover returning to repeat his role – he was originally featured in Solo: A Star Wars Story – although you’d expect it to happen.

Andor In addition to Diego Luna, who returns as Cassian Andor from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Stellan Skarsgård, Adria Arjona, Fiona Shaw, Denise Gough, Kyle Soller and Genevieve O’Reilly (as Mon Mothma) will also appear. Tony Gilroy is back Andorwho will fly on Disney + and Disney + Hotstar in 2022.

Obi Wan Kenobi opens 10 years after Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith with Ewan McGregor in the title role and is now supported by Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker / Darth Vader, whom he defeated in this climax but lost the bigger fight as his best. The acolyte is a mystery thriller that takes viewers to a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging forces of the dark side in the final days of the High Republic era. It was originally revealed in April as a female-centric Star Wars series that takes place in a different timeline than any other show. Leslye Headland, co-creator and showrunner of Netflix’s Russian Doll, is behind the idea.

Star Wars: Visions will be an anthology series of 10 animated short films from the world’s top anime creators and leading Japanese anime studios, delivering “brand new, creative insights into the galaxy far, far away” and a “fresh and diverse cultural perspective”.

A droid story brings back R2-D2 and C-3PO for an animated adventure film that introduces a new hero led by the droid duo. Lucasfilm Animation will be working with Lucasfilm’s visual effects team, Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), on A Droid Story.
