Signal Tops Charts on the App Store, Google Play Thanks to WhatsApp Controversy

Signal is now at the top of the charts on the App Store in India. The app is number one among the best free apps in the Indian market while it is third in the Google Play Store. These massive new downloads were generated due to the ongoing WhatsApp controversy regarding the updated privacy policy. WhatsApp is forcing users to agree to the updated terms and guidelines and is warning users that if they do not accept the new terms, they will no longer be able to use the app after February 8th. This has resulted in several WhatsApp users leaving the messaging platform and migrating to Signal instead.

Because of this sudden surge in new downloads, Signal ranks # 1 on the App Store in India and # 3 on Google Play at the time of writing. Android police Reports This signal is at the top of the Google Play top charts in the US, UK, Germany, Lebanon and France regions. In Brazil and Singapore, Signal is reportedly ranked third on Google Play, similar to the Indian market.

Signal recently also tweeted that the app was listed as the best free app on Apple’s App Store charts in India, Austria, France, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong and Switzerland.

This movement of WhatsApp users switching to Signal gained a lot of momentum after Tesla’s Elon Musk advised its 41.9 million followers to use Signal. Even popular whistleblower Edward Snowden and Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma later tweeted about their followers to switch to Signal. Sharma continues that WhatsApp and Facebook are abusing their monopoly by taking the privacy of millions of users for granted.

Just one day after Musk’s tweet, Signal reported that there was a massive increase in new registrations, which would lead to delays in checking the code for a few network operators. However, this bug was fixed soon after, and users should be able to log into Signal without any problems.

In one last tweetSignal also accused Facebook of paying money to show Messenger as a top result when some people search for “Signal” on the App Store. In response to this signal, he replied: “Ads will never be shown in Signal because your data belongs in your hands and not ours.” Signal was founded by WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton and is considered the gold standard for privacy among top journalists, academics and even security professionals.

In addition to Signal, users are also switching to other messaging apps like Telegram. WhatsApp has made it clear that the new privacy policy will apply to business accounts and no change to the policy terms will apply to personal consumer accounts. However, the enforced nature of these terms and the ultimatum offered by WhatsApp to accept this new policy have not been well received by users.
