Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 can come with an S-stylus, single hinge design

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 (not its official name) has hit the news again, and this time around, a report claims the phone comes with an S-pen. According to the report, Samsung filed a patent for it back in April. The patent also details Samsung’s plan to make future foldable phones compatible with the S Pen. Interestingly, the new sketches from the 56-page documentation show a single hinge design for the folding mechanism, as opposed to the recently discovered two-hinge design.

Samsung has reportedly filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) for a foldable device with an S-pen. The picture as reported by LetsGoDigital shows a foldable phone with a mechanism similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 with a slot for the S Pen on one of the folding boards. The S-pen may fit in the top left corner of the phone or the bottom right corner. The S Pen seems to have a similar design to that of the Galaxy Note 20 series.

LetsGoDigital, in collaboration with designer Jermaine Smit, shared some unofficial concept renders of the rumored Galaxy Z Fold 3 with an S pen. According to the rendering, the S Pen is located on the bottom right of the phone next to the USB Type-C port. The report adds that the patent mentions an “electromagnetic resonance pen,” but it is speculated that Samsung might use Active Electrostatic Solution (AES) instead. The reason for this is that electromagnetic resonance (EMR) works fine with a regular display like the Galaxy Note 20 but doesn’t work optimally with the foldable display in Galaxy Z Fold 3. AES, on the other hand, works well with ultra-thin glass.

Another report recently cited product sketches from a patent filed with the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) showing a double hinge and tri-fold screen design for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. This sketch did not contain an S-pen, but a sliding keyboard with touch-sensitive buttons.

It should be noted that the renderings released by LetsGoDigital are not official. Samsung has not officially shared any information about the Galaxy Z Fold 3 either.
