Review: Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Series X is a step forward, but not enough

How does Cyberpunk 2077 work on a next-gen console like the Xbox Series X? We already told you that the game on PlayStation 4 is a disaster. On the Xbox One X, it’s – unsurprisingly, since it’s a half-generation upgrade – an advancement, but it still falls short of expectations. If you’re one of the 160+ million current generation console owners who were hoping to enjoy the latest title from the Witcher 3 developer CD, Projekt Red, on launch, you’ve essentially stuck in the moment. But we also tried the game on the Xbox Series X and were able to compare the experiences.

There is currently no native version of Cyberpunk 2077 for next-generation consoles (PS5 and Series X). That will only be available sometime in 2021 – as a free upgrade for those who bought it on PS4 or Xbox One, according to CD Projekt Red. The Xbox Series X has an additional Cyberpunk 2077 feature that no other console has. In the Game Settings section on Microsoft’s most powerful console, you’ll find a Video tab that is unavailable on other consoles only on PC. There you can choose between two modes: “Performance” or “Quality”. Although CD Projekt Red does not state the differences in other games that also offer this, one can assume that one prioritizes the frame rate (60 fps / unlocked) and the other focuses on the resolution. This is strange because Cyberpunk 2077 is not currently available for Xbox Series X | S is optimized. That said, if you play the game on Xbox Series X, you essentially get the Xbox One X version – but it looks better because it has more power and some cool hardware tricks. The Video tab isn’t available on the Xbox One X, although that was part of the promise when these half-generation upgrades launched. And many games (for example Forza Horizon 4 and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order) have lived up to that promise, giving Xbox One X owners a choice between performance and quality.

On Xbox One X, Cyberpunk 2077 appears tied to a performance mode, and yet the performance is nowhere near acceptable. While many other games on Xbox One X offer either smooth performance or 4K resolution, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be stuck in no man’s land. It doesn’t feel like it’s running at a constant 30fps (sometimes it hangs and freezes for milliseconds), nor does it go anywhere near 2160p, which the latter confirms Digital foundry. This is disappointing because Cyberpunk 2077 is technically an “Xbox One X Enhanced” title.

The game looks a lot better on Xbox Series X and has a lot better performance. In “Performance” mode, the Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay is smooth and seems to be around 60 fps. And in “Quality” mode, Cyberpunk 2077 finally feels like a modern game and not like a relic from the Full HD era. I’m not entirely impressed with the graphics – there are many perks, but the details can be lacking, I thought – and it’s not something that I’m excited about, as I would expect from a next-gen game. It should be noted, however, that Cyberpunk 2077 is not a next-generation game, just backwards compatibility. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on an Xbox Series X, this is how you should play Cyberpunk 2077.

Of course, it’s not without its problems. Aside from the jumbled and flat textures I was talking about, there are some aliasing or pop-in issues with Cyberpunk 2077 graphics on the Xbox Series X. This was most noticeable on the pedestrian crossings where the edges of the yellow stripes seem to move like this: I panned the camera in the game. And of course, that’s nothing to say about the many visual flaws that plague every version of Cyberpunk 2077. Just like my experience on the PlayStation 4, I encountered floating guns and couldn’t pick up any prey, no matter how much I changed my position. The latter is sometimes caused by enemy bodies stacking on top of each other. Except that the bodies fuse together on Cyberpunk 2077.

CD Projekt Red has admitted that it “ignored” PS4 and Xbox One versions and focused too much on PC and next-gen. It clearly took more time to get the game ready for the world’s most popular consoles, and it said so. However, my experience with Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X shows that there is currently no ideal way to play the game on consoles. Yes, it’s way better than what PS4 and Xbox One owners have to endure. To them, it feels like a case of the PC hookup from GTA IV, except vice versa, as consoles are the problem here.

With next-gen consoles still hard to come by – the PS5 wasn’t even launched in India yet – and PC builds powerful enough to run the game at 4K, parts availability issues (not to mention high Cost) Apparently, most people will be able to play an acceptable version of Cyberpunk 2077 for some time.
