Redmi’s first gaming phone may have MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC

Redmi may launch its first gaming smartphone, which may be the first Xiaomi sub-brand handset to use the newly launched MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, according to a tipster. The news comes as several OEMs including Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo, and Realme announced they would be releasing phones with the new SoC. The news builds on an earlier development in which Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing indicated that the successor to the Redmi K30 Extreme will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, which is based on a 6 nm architecture.

After a Weibo post Office Redmi will launch its first gaming smartphone with the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC. The tipster did not find any further information such as the name of the handset. The news follows a recent development in Redmi General Manager Lu Weibing indicated that the company will soon discontinue the Redmi K30 Extreme smartphone and launch a successor Redmi smartphone with the newly introduced SoC. He didn’t provide a name for the handset, however, but reports suggest it could be the Redmi K40.

In addition, Xiaomi, Vivo, Oppo and Realme have already announced that they will be releasing phones with the new SoC. Realme has even claimed that it will be one of the first to release a flagship smartphone with the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC, which was introduced along with the MediaTek Dimensity 1100 SoC.

MediaTek Dimensity 1200 octa-core SoC has an ARM Cortex-A78 ultra-core that is clocked at up to 3 GHz and 2X L2 cache. There are three ARM Cortex-A78 super cores with speeds up to 2.6 GHz and four Arm Cortex-A55 efficiency cores with up to 2 GHz. It uses the Arm Mali-G77 MC9 GPU and supports a maximum of 16 GB LDDR4x memory as well as UFS 3.1 memory. MediaTek Dimensity 1200 can deliver a maximum of 2,520 x 1,080 pixels and a refresh rate of up to 168 Hz.

In the camera department, the SoC supports a single 200-megapixel camera sensor or two sensors (up to 32 megapixels) in addition to a 16-megapixel sensor. The SoC’s connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6, multimode 5G, 4G, GPS, Bluetooth 5.2, and FM radio. It has also received TÜV Rheinland certification for its 5G performance.
