Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus launch for the second half of 2021

Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 Plus or Snapdragon 888+ is slated to hit the market in the second half of this year. We haven’t seen many smartphones with the Snapdragon 888 – the flagship SoC that hit the market in December – but reports of its Plus variant have already begun. According to tipsters, we can assume that the 888 Plus variant will appear in the second half of 2021, which makes sense since Qualcomm is usually updated around the middle of the year.

So far, the Xiaomi Mi 11 has been launched with Snapdragon 888 and it has been confirmed that iQoo 7 will debut with the new chipset on January 11th. Several other brands have also announced smartphones for 2021 that feature the latest SoC from Qualcomm. This includes the Samsung Galaxy S21 and OnePlus 9 series.

After a Weibo post Office Qualcomm will launch the Snapdragon 888 Plus SoC in the second half of 2021. Apart from that, there is no information about the rumored chipset. The tip seems to be in line with Qualcomm’s traditional schedule of starting a mid-year SoC refresh. In July 2019, the chip manufacturer announced the Snapdragon 855 Plus as an upgrade of its flagship chipset. The same goes for Snapdragon 865+, which was launched in July 2020.

The tipster also claims that the US-based chipmaker has capped the Snapdragon 888’s GPU frequency to 840 MHz to prevent OEMs from overclocking the chip on their devices. This means the Snapdragon 888 Plus will likely be a minor upgrade over the Snapdragon 888 – just like in the case of the Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus. The Snapdragon 865 Plus should deliver a performance increase of 10 percent compared to the Snapdragon 865. The Adreno 650 GPU is also only 10 percent faster than the GPU in the Snapdragon 865, according to Qualcomm.

As already mentioned, the Xiaomi Mi 11 is the first smartphone to be launched on the market with the Snapdragon 888 (features and details). A full list of smartphones that will ship with Qualcomm’s flagship SoC has been announced.
