Japan’s Nintendo raised its sales forecast for its successful game console on Thursday. Switch from 1.9 million to 2.4 crore devices in March 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic spikes consumer spending on home games.
The jump in sales forecast was due to the fact that the Kyoto-based gaming company grew from JPY 94 billion (approx. 6,700 billion rupees) in the same period of the year to JPY 291.4 billion (approx. 20,800 billion rupees) tripled earlier.
Nintendo, the home of the multi-year Super Mario franchise, had been hesitant to raise forecasts despite the high sales of its Switch system.
However, bans and restrictions imposed around the world to curb the spread of the coronavirus mean entertainment options remain limited for many as consumers look to the year-end shopping season and hint at continued demand for games.
Sony and Microsoft will be releasing next-generation consoles next week, increasing competition for the mid-cycle switch launched in March 2017.
Sony’s gaming boss said last week that ahead of the release of the upcoming console, the PlayStation 5, demand is exceeding expectations and the tech giant is raising its guidance for the full year.
