Microsoft Teams support in Internet Explorer 11 ends today

Microsoft Teams will stop working on Internet Explorer 11 (IE 11) starting today, November 30th. The company announced that Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer 11 in August. Microsoft Teams web application is the first to stop the browser from working. This appears to be an attempt to migrate users to the newer Microsoft Edge. Edge will support Microsoft 365 apps, and the company says it will enable “better, more innovative online experiences.”

Microsoft back in August announced Microsoft 365 apps and services will no longer support Internet Explorer 11 through August 2021. The first app to end support for the browser is Microsoft Teams, the company’s video conferencing app, which has seen significant growth this year due to the ongoing pandemic and working from home requirements. As of August 17th blog entry The company will end support for IE 11 on November 30th. However, Microsoft Edge will support Teams, and the browser was designed to provide “faster, more responsive web access to larger features in everyday tool sets like Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, and more.”

Starting March 9, next year, support for the older Microsoft Edge, known as Microsoft Edge Legacy, will end. Microsoft Edge was first released about two years ago and rebuilt on the Chromium open source engine. Windows 10 version 20H2 and higher is now pre-installed. Because of this new Edge browser, support for Microsoft Edge Legacy will end and no security updates will be received.

As of August 2021, Microsoft 365 apps and services in addition to Teams will no longer support IE 11 and users will need to switch to Edge for further support. Microsoft recommends the new Edge browser for users who use Microsoft 365 apps and services in IE 11 or who prefer the Microsoft Edge legacy browser. It has a number of support options to help users make the switch.
