Microsoft releases Office for Mac Beta with Apple Silicon support

Microsoft Office is released on Mac computers that include support for Apple silicon. The latest version of Office will initially be available through a beta channel, but it would take some time to be finalized. With this new step, Redmond is one of the first third-party developers to use the Apple “Universal Apps” model to support the new ARM-based architecture. The beta version of Office for Mac is about to debut the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and Mac mini, which are based on the latest silicon.

As announced The Universal Build of Mac Office 2019 has been published on the beta channel by Microsoft’s most important software developer for Apple products, Erik Schwiebert on Twitter. It doesn’t include any new features, but it does support the Apple silicon that was introduced earlier this week.

“We don’t have a public date or version for a final release. This is a first look for customers to test out the hardware they may purchase this week, ”the engineer wrote in his tweet.

At its virtual event on Tuesday, Apple highlighted the introduction of universal apps that will run natively on the new Mac computers with the M1 chip. The company also called on Adobe to be among the first to bring their universal versions of Mac apps to market. Lightroom will get the new treatment as soon as next month, and Photoshop will get the same update early next year.

However, it seems that Microsoft also wants to reach out to the developers who offer native support for the Apple silicon and want to get Office 2019 to the new computers quickly.

Aside from universal apps, the systems with Apple silicon come with Rosetta 2. This new offering, which will be part of macOS Big Sur, essentially translates the existing app code to run over the new architecture. However, you may encounter some performance issues as the code does not natively support the M1 chip.

Apple also announced that the machines based on its in-house silicon can run iOS and iPadOS apps. Likewise, the pre-installed apps that come with a Mac immediately support the new architecture. You can therefore expect some apps to be available when the new machines start up next week.

You can to join the Beta Program for Mac Office 2019 to get the latest update before the new Mac deals are available.
