Mi Watch Revolve Review

Mi Watch Revolve is Xiaomi’s first smartwatch to launch in India and it looks like the company has done its homework. The Mi Watch Revolve offers interesting hardware that is not common in wearables at this price. It runs proprietary software and can track multiple exercises. To top it off, Xiaomi claims a two week standby time so you don’t have to charge this watch often. Xiaomi had the Mi Watch Revolve priced at Rs. 10,999 in India which seems pretty aggressive. Is This the Smartwatch for You? I checked the Mi Watch Revolve to find out.

Mi Watch Revolve design and specifications

Xiaomi has the basics when it comes to design. You get a circular display with a thin black bezel. This is packaged in a shiny metal body with two buttons on the right side. The button at the top is the on / off switch and can also be used to enter menus while using the watch. The second button is a shortcut key and can be assigned to a quick workout or other function of your choice. Both buttons provide solid clicking feedback.

The Mi Watch Revolve has a 46mm case, which makes it bigger than some of the other wearables you get on the market. While the large display is easy to read and has more content on each screen, it can look and feel too thin even if you have thin hands. You could also accidentally hit the clock while walking around, which I did the first few days I used them. Xiaomi raised the case around the 1.39-inch AMOLED display to ensure safety in the event of accidental bumps. For protection, there is also Corning Gorilla Glass 3 with a scratch-resistant coating. After 15 days I can say that the display of my test device has no scratches.

The Mi Watch Revolve can be tracked and is waterproof up to 5 ATM

When purchasing this smartwatch, you can choose between Midnight Black and Chrome Silver cases. I had a Chrome Silver unit with a Neptune Blue bracelet. The belt is 22 mm wide and can be exchanged for any 22 mm standard belt. Xiaomi has used quick release pins to attach it to the watch loops so that it can be easily removed without tools.

Turn the watch over and you will find a heart rate monitor in the center of the back with a contact point on either side for charging. Xiaomi offers GPS and GLONASS for the Mi Watch Revolve, with which it can follow walks and runs without having to be paired with a smartphone. It also has Bluetooth 5 LE for connectivity and an ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the screen brightness.

Surprisingly, the Mi Watch Revolve isn’t too heavy. With the included straps, it weighs around 60g, while the body alone weighs 40g. However, it feels bulky and sleeping with this big watch is not easy. At least Xiaomi made good use of the large case by packing a 420 mAh battery. The Mi Watch Revolve is also waterproof up to 5 ATM, so you can swim without any problems.

Mi Watch Revolve software

You need to install the Xiaomi Wear app if you are using Android or the Xiaomi Wear Lite app on an iPhone to pair the smartwatch. I have paired my Mi Watch Revolve with an Android smartphone. The process was quite simple and the watch kept a stable connection. You can configure the Mi Watch Revolve using the app and decide which apps you can notify on your wrist. You can also change the watch faces and download new ones to suit your needs. You can switch between watch faces from Mi Watch Revolve once you’ve downloaded them.

The Mi Watch Revolve works more like a notifier, meaning you cannot reply to messages. If you were hoping to have a WhatsApp conversation from the watch, then you can’t. You can see alerts for incoming calls, but you cannot answer a call using the watch like you can with the Huawei Watch GT 2 (Review) or many other options.

You can change some settings on the watch itself, e.g. For example, you can set the display brightness manually or activate the automatic adjustment, change the vibration intensity and switch to the always-on mode. You can use the Find My Phone feature on the watch to make your smartphone ring loudly. The Mi Watch Revolve can also display atmospheric pressure and altitude, and has a built-in compass that is helpful if you like trekking or other outdoor activities.

Mi Watch Revolve performance

To test the accuracy of the Mi Watch Revolve, I manually counted 500 steps while walking and found that the smartwatch counted 502 steps, which is not a large deviation. I also covered a distance of 500 meters and the device calculated 510 meters. Distance and step tracking have slight variances, but not enough to disturb a casual user. At the end of the day, you’ll still get a good idea of the number of steps you’ve taken and the distance traveled.

Sleep tracking was accurate and the Mi Watch Revolve tracked various phases of sleep well. It displays recordings in phases labeled deep sleep, light sleep, REM and awakening and also guides you to improve the quality of sleep. I didn’t wear the Mi Watch Revolve to sleep every night as I found it to be a bit too bulky to comfortably sleep with on my wrist.

The heart rate measurement was fairly accurate, but the Mi Watch Revolve was sometimes slow to register a change in heart rate. This was particularly noticeable during training. The Mi Watch Revolve can also track stress by measuring heart rate variability and comparing it to activity intensity data. This works best when you are stationary and may not give an indication when you are moving or exercising. The Mi Watch Revolve also displays “energy levels” by taking into account several parameters such as daily activity, exercise, stress and sleep. I noticed that days when I hadn’t slept well it reported lower energy levels, but I wouldn’t take this metric seriously.

The battery life of the Mi Watch Revolve depends on how you set it up and how often you exercise. I spent about two weeks with Mi Watch Revolve by only allowing selected notifications from some apps and turning off the always-on viewing feature, but it turned on continuous heart rate tracking. If the always-on display is on and there are a lot of notifications for messaging apps like WhatsApp, then the battery is likely to drain. If you often go for walks and follow exercises, the Mi Watch Revolve’s GPS also contributes to battery drain.
