MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G SoC for Mass Market Smartphones Introduced

MediaTek presented the Dimensity 700 as the latest 7 nm 5G chipset for smartphones for the mass market at its Executive Virtual Summit 2020 on Tuesday. The new system-on-chip (SoC) comes over three months after the Taiwanese chipmaker introduced the Dimensity 720 as a solution for mid-range 5G phones. In addition to the new Dimensity SoC, MediaTek has launched two new chipsets for Chromebooks – the MT8195 and the MT8192. The company also teased its plans to launch a new high-end SoC with 5G support for smartphones, based on 6nm process technology and incorporating ARM Cortex-A78 cores.

In terms of architecture, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC is pretty similar to the Dimensity 720. The chip contains two powerful ARM Cortex-A76 cores with a maximum clock rate of 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores with 2.0 GHz. It can also be coupled with up to 12 GB LPDDR4x-RAM at a frequency of 2.133 MHz and two-lane UFS 2.2 memory and transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbit / s.

In contrast to the Dimensity 720 SoC, which comes with an ARM Mali-G57 MC3-GPU, the Dimensity 700 SoC contains a slightly worse Mali-G57 MC2-GPU. This could be a step towards saving costs.

Nevertheless, the Dimensity 700 SoC supports a Full HD + display with a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. The chip also supports primary camera sensors with up to 64 megapixels as well as improvements to the camera’s artificial intelligence (AI) such as AI bokeh and AI Color and beauty features.

In terms of connectivity, the MediaTek Dimensity 700 SoC has a 5G modem that supports carrier aggregation to enable download speeds of up to 2.77 Gbps and seamless handover between two 5G link areas. There is also dual 5G SIM support that allows users to have two 5G networks on their smartphones at the same time. For energy efficiency even in 5G networks, the chipset MediaTek contains 5G UltraSave, with which the operating mode of the 5G modem can be intelligently managed in order to extend the battery life.

The Dimensity 700 SoC also offers support for multiple voice assistants, including Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Baidu DuerOS. VoNR (Voice over New Radio) services are also supported.

MediaTek intends to bring the Dimensity 700 SoC to the smartphone market in the first quarter of 2021. Additionally, the chipset is expected to provide power to phones priced at $ 250 (about Rs. 18,000).

In addition to the Dimensity 700, MediaTek announced the MT8192 and MT8195 SoCs for Chromebooks at its Executive Summit. The 7nm MT8192 is specially designed for mainstream Chromebook models, while the 6nm MT8195 is geared towards premium versions. Both chipsets come with an AI processing unit (APU) to support a range of language and vision-based apps. The APU is designed to handle speech recognition and voice control, speech and image recognition, speech to text, live translation, object recognition, background removal, noise reduction, image and video segmentation, gesture control, and Google AR Core-based enhancements.

Both MT8192 and MT8195 are equipped with a dedicated digital audio signal processor (DSP) for working with voice assistants. Similarly, an HDR Image Signal Processor (HDR ISP) along with a hardware depth engine has been provided to support up to 8 megapixel four cell cameras. The chipsets also support a single 32-megapixel camera or two 16-megapixel cameras.

MediaTek adds support for 4K HDR video decoding on both of the new Chromebook chips. It also supports Dolby Vision, 7.1 surround sound audio and a Codec AV1 hardware video accelerator for an enhanced multimedia experience. The chipsets also support PCI-Express Gen 3 and USB 3.2 Gen 1.

The MediaTek MT8192 SoC comes with an octa-core CPU that contains four cores ARM Cortex-A76 and four cores ARM Cortex-A55. The CPU is coupled with an ARM Mali-G57 GPU with five cores and supports LPDDR4x-RAM up to 2.133 MHz as well as UFS 2.1 memory. The integrated APU 2.0 also offers a performance of up to 2.4 Tera per second (TOPS).

Chromebook manufacturers can add Wide Quad Quad High Definition (WQHD) displays with a standard refresh rate of 60 Hz or Full HD + displays with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz. The MT8192 also supports two full HD displays at the same time.

In contrast, the MediaTek MT8195 SoC contains four ARM Cortex-A78 cores and four energy-saving ARM Cortex-A55 cores. The chipset is coupled with the APU 3.0 from MediaTek, which offers a performance of up to 4 TOPS. There is also support for LPDDR4x RAM at 2,133 MHz. The MT8195 can support up to three displays at the same time. There are also features like Dolby Vision, 7.1 surround sound audio, and a Codec AV1 video accelerator.

Chromebooks with the MT8192 will be launched in the second quarter of 2021, while the devices powered by the MT8195 will be available at a later date.
