An iPhone manufacturing facility in Karnataka’s Kolar district, operated by Wistron Corporation, headquartered in Taiwan, was reportedly destroyed. A video clip of the violence, allegedly by workers, has also appeared online. However, this clip has not been independently verified. The Press Trust of India quoted a police officer as saying the workers attacked the facility – damaged windows, vehicles, furniture and computers – because of wage problems. A union leader also reportedly said that most workers are not paid on time and are unhappy with many deductions from their wages.
The workers reportedly claim that many of them had to work 12 hours but only paid Rs. 200 to Rs. 300 per day billed for 7-8 hours, according to a report by News 18. The vandalism took place after management failed to address their complaints, according to the report.
Hundreds of workers are said to have searched the manufacturing facility in the Narasapura industrial area in Kolar District, 51 kilometers from Bengaluru, after their night shift ended at 4 a.m. today, December 12.
The Wistron Corporation manufactures among other things iPhone 7 for Apple and IT products for Lenovo and Microsoft. The company has not yet issued an official statement.
