iPhone 12 teardown video suggests Snapdragon X55 5G modem on board

The iPhone 12 teardown video surfaced right before it went on sale in early markets such as Australia, Canada, the UK and the US. The teardown cover shows that the new iPhone model has the Qualcomm Snapdragon X55 5G modem. This is the same modem that you get on smartphones like the Mi 10T and OnePlus 8T. The demolition also shows how Apple made room for new antennas by shrinking some core components. The new iPhone comes with a MagSafe magnet assembly to support a variety of new accessories.

A detailed teardown video for both Weibo and Youtube highlights similarities in the overall layout of iPhone 12 and iPhone 11. However, there are significant differences that are apparently intended to provide 5G support.

One of the main differences between iPhone 12 and iPhone 11 is the presence of a larger logic board on the new model. However, other key components, including the Taptic Engine and the speaker assembly, are smaller compared to those on the iPhone 11. The OLED display on the new iPhone also appears to be thinner than the screen on the previous year’s model.

The tear-off video also shows the MagSafe magnet assembly, which is available alongside the wireless charging coil. The iPhone 12’s 2,815 mAh battery, which previously surfaced with a Brazilian certification, can also be seen in the video. In terms of capacity, it’s 15 percent lower than the iPhone 11’s 3,110 mAh battery.

Although the teardown video on the 5G modem does not provide clarity, it is a different video Posted on Weibo, which indicates the presence of Snapdragon X55 on the iPhone 12’s L-shaped logic board. It enables support of 5G mmWave and sub-6GHz networks. Snapdragon X55 is the successor to Qualcomm’s first commercial 5G modem – Snapdragon X50.
