iPhone 12 camera camera lags behind Android flagships, says DxOMark

The iPhone 12 was tested by the DxOMark benchmark website to analyze camera performance against a list of proprietary benchmarks. The latest iPhone model has a brand new wide angle lens as well as an ultra wide angle lens to provide a better photo experience than last year’s iPhone 11. The dual camera setup of the iPhone 12 is also identical to that of the iPhone 12 mini. However, DxOMark tests have shown that the hardware available on the iPhone 12 not only lags behind the iPhone 12 Pro models, but also behind flagships from companies such as Huawei, Oppo, Samsung and Xiaomi.

Test results for iPhone 12 DxOMark cameras

The iPhone 12 receive a total camera score of 122 from DxOMark. In terms of still photography in particular, the latest model received a score of 132 while the zoom performance reached 41 points. The overall score of the iPhone 12 put it just outside the top 10 best camera phones rated by DxOMark. It was eight points less than the 130 points the iPhone 12 Pro Max scored and six points less than the iPhone 12 Pro. Last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max also outperformed the iPhone 12 with an overall score of 124.

Android phones like the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro, Oppo Find X2 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G also outperformed the iPhone 12 with better results. Even so, the new iPhone was included in the list of top 10 phones for photos in the DxOMark database with 132 points for still images.

DxOMark notes that the iPhone 12 does the basics pretty well, with generally accurate exposure, pleasant color rendering, and fast auto focus regardless of the lighting conditions. The iPhone model also delivers photos with “lots of detail” in bright to moderate lighting conditions.

On the other hand, the iPhone 12 is observed to have decreased dynamic range and more noise levels than expected. The phone also has a disappointing simulated bokeh portrait mode. In addition, the lack of a dedicated tele module affects the zoom performance. According to the tests conducted by the DxOMark team, white balance on the iPhone 12 also affects still images and videos.

The iPhone 12 received a video score of 112 in the DxOMark benchmark. The score is identical to that of the iPhone 12 Pro and is only one point behind the iPhone 12 Pro Max.

“The features are almost identical to those of the iPhone 12 Pro – not surprising, since the hardware of the main camera appears to be identical. The exposure is accurate and the dynamic range is large, thanks also to the inclusion of Dolby Vision HDR, ”said the DxOMark team in their test.

However, the iPhone 12 has been found to have limited dynamic range compared to the competition. The low-light performance of the latest regular iPhone model also affects videos with a loss of detail.

“If zoom and portrait performance is not a priority for you, the iPhone 12 essentially does all the bang of the iPhone 12 Pro for less,” concluded DxOMark in its conclusion.
