The Intel Core i5-11600K is Intel’s mid-range answer to the fantastic AMD Ryzen 5 5600X with the same number of cores and threads and even a cheaper price point – especially when you consider the current lack of AMD processors.
Given the difficult introduction of Intel’s 11th generation processors, the Intel Core i5-11600K is likely the highlight of the entire generation and certainly the best processor Intel has released this year.
Coupled with the fact that this processor is only $ 269 (£ 248, AU $ 419) compared to the price of the Ryzen 5 5600X of $ 349 (£ 349, AU $ 549), the Intel Core i5 11600K might be the best processor player that doesn’t really have to choose a super high-end processor.
Price and availability
The Intel Core i5-11600K launched on March 30, 2021 with a suggested retail price of $ 262. It is currently listed at most retailers for $ 269 (£ 248, AU $ 419), making it one of the most affordable processors, especially for gamers.
You just have to look at the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X to see why. AMD’s six-core mid-range champion is currently listed for $ 349 (£ 349, AU $ 549), which is a significant price hike. Now the AMD processor is a little faster, but not so fast that it’s worth the extra $ 80.
While Rocket Lake is largely a wasted generation of processors, the Intel Core i5-11600K is really a good buy for most gamers, though you’ll need to invest in a solid CPU cooler to handle the higher power consumption and temperatures the previous one Generation.
Chipset and Features
The Intel Core i5-11600K is based on the Rocket Lake-S architecture of the 11th generation from Intel and is again based on a 14 nm manufacturing process. Unlike previous generations, which were all based on the 2015 Skylake architecture, Intel instead took the 7nm Ice Lake architecture and ported it back to 14nm architecture, a new core architecture called Cypress Cove.
The main reason Intel did this was to allow the clock speeds to be set higher than the current 7 nm, which is important for PC gaming. For the Core i9-11900K, this was a major downgrade as Intel was forced to switch back to a 16-thread design with eight cores. For the Core i5, however, this leads to enormous leaps in the power generation generation, which we will go into later.
However, this additional service is not free. The Intel Core i5-11600K uses a lot more power and gets a lot hotter than the Intel Core i5-10600K, and it’s not even close.
Without reaching the Intel Core i5-10600K like Prime95, it achieves a peak power consumption of only 95.15 W. The 11600K, on the other hand, has an output of 180.74 W – almost twice as much power. As a result, the temperatures are much higher. Even when the exact same cooler is used in exactly the same tests, the Intel Core i5-11600K reaches peak values at 76 ° C, a huge jump over the 61 ° C of the 10600K.
This means that for the first time, we recommend anyone who picks up this processor to go for a fairly sturdy CPU cooler. It’s getting hot.
In the past, this level of processor was essentially intended for people who just wanted to make a mid-range PC, but with the amount of cooling and power required, you’ll have to invest in a hefty cooler as well as a power supply that can keep up with how much juice this thing is sucking out of the wall – especially when you pair it with a powerful graphics card like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080.
Probably the coolest thing about this generation of Intel processors, however, is PCIe 4.0 compatibility. Intel has finally caught up with AMD on the desktop in this regard, and you’ll be able to use the fastest SSDs on the market – which is probably why faster SSDs hit the market all of a sudden.

When reviewing the Intel Core i9-11900K, we heavily criticized it for not only lagging behind its competition but also the previous generation’s Intel Core i9-10900K. The Core i5-10600K Not have this problem.
Now it is falling behind the AMD Ryzen 5 5600X in some workloads, namely high-performance creative workloads like Blender and Adobe Premiere. That’s pretty much to be expected, AMD has been extremely strong in these uses for a number of years. However, with the price of the Intel Core i5-11600K being what it is, gaming performance is far more important as creatives are likely to jump on something more expensive anyway.
And the Intel Core i5-11600K doesn’t exactly blow the Ryzen 5 5600X out of the water here, but it exchanges blows quite effectively. Our CPU test suite includes three gaming workloads, 3DMark Time Spy, Metro Exodus at 1080p at low settings, and Total War: Three Kingdoms at 1080p at low settings. Intel wins in both the 3DMark CPU score and the Metro Exodus. And even his loss in Total War: Three Kingdoms is only a 5% loss.
For a processor that’s a whopping 30% cheaper than the Ryzen 5 5600X, really don’t miss out if your primary focus is playing your favorite PC games. And while the Core i5-11600K falls a little behind in something like Premiere, there’s still more than enough headroom here to stream over OBS – double when you pair it with an Nvidia graphics card with the fantastic NVENC encoder couple.
More important, however, is how much the Core i5-11600K is improved over the Core i5-10600K. Again, this is mainly due to the higher power consumption, but you are seeing a gigantic 24-44% increase in potential gaming performance.
Unless you’re really after the high frame rates found in esports titles, of course, you’re unlikely to be playing anything with this graphics card at low 1080p settings, but this processor is far less likely to be a bottleneck. End graphics card, which means you are more likely to run the 360 Hz gaming monitors that are available in the market.
If all you want to do is build yourself a nice, affordable gaming rig and don’t think you’re going to go all-in on content creation, the Intel Core i5-11600K may well be one of the best processors out there right now. You have to deal with frankly out of control power consumption and temperatures that add to the cost of your build when you factor in cooling and power, but this is likely the Intel processor you need to buy.
Hopefully next-gen Intel will bring out more than just a Core i5 processor worth buying. Until then, the Intel Core i5-11600K will be a fantastic chip for any PC gamer, aspiring or otherwise.
Buy it when …
You want to play some pc games
The Intel Core i5-11600K is one of the best processors for gaming, especially if you don’t want to spend too much on your build.
You are on a budget
Well-known processors like the Intel Core i9-11900K and the Ryzen 9 5900X are really cool and powerful, but also very expensive. If your budget allows only a few hundred dollars or pounds for a CPU, the Core i5-11600K is a great choice.
You will get yourself a water cooler either way
Regardless of whether or not they are required, all-in-one liquid CPU coolers are absolutely everywhere these days. If you were planning on buying one of these coolers anyway, the Core i5-11600K is great.
Don’t buy it if …
You don’t have the budget for a badass cooler
The Intel Core i5-11600K gets a lot hotter and uses a lot more power than previous Core i5 processors. So if you are not thinking about cooling in your budget, then you should reconsider.
You already have a current processor
While the Intel Core i5-10600K is theoretically a huge leap over previous chips when it comes to gaming, you’ll only really see this difference if you’re trying to get really fast frame rates. If you’ve got something newer than a 7th generation processor, you probably won’t see a noticeable jump in performance unless you’re a big esports gamer.
