With the best VPS hosting, host a website, take advantage of powerful cloud computing, and more. There are numerous options available, including the increasingly popular one iDrive Compute.
In our iDrive Compute Test, we take a closer look at this US cloud computing and VPS service provider. By analyzing key features, pricing, and more, we provide the information you need to make an informed decision about whether this provider might be of use to you.
IDrive is the best cloud storage provider
IDrive, the cloud storage veteran, offers tons of storage online for an incredibly low cost. 5 TB for $ 3.48 for the first year is unmatched, as is the support for unlimited devices and the extensive file versioning system.
Plans and Pricing
iDrive Compute offers a range of subscription options with annual and monthly payments. At the lower end of the spectrum there are a number of shared CPU plansthat start at $ 5 per month for 1GB of RAM, 40GB of storage, and 1TB of bandwidth. Annual payments are also possible at a special price of USD 6 for the first year (USD 60 for subsequent years).
Then there are the much more advanced common CPU plans. The most expensive option is $ 320 per month and includes 64 GB of RAM, 1280 GB of storage, and 12 TB of bandwidth.
Alternatively, you can opt for one of the CPU optimized or memory optimized dedicated CPU plans. Numerous options are also available here. CPU-optimized VPS starts at $ 40 per month for 4GB of RAM, 25GB of storage, and 6TB of bandwidth.
Meanwhile, storage-optimized plans start at $ 60 a month. This gives you 8 GB of RAM, 120 GB of storage and 10 TB of bandwidth.
Hourly subscriptions are also available, though the lack of a free trial is a little disappointing. If you exceed your allotted resources, additional charges may apply, with the additional bandwidth being $ 0.01 per GB.
Despite being a relative newcomer to the cloud computing market, iDrive Compute offers an impressive array of advanced features.
An outstanding feature is the advanced infrastructure of iDrive Compute. All servers have modern processing units and fast NVMe storage. You can choose from a number of Linux distributions, and customize and scale your plans as needed.
Another interesting feature of the service is the choice of data center locations from iDrive Compute. At the time of writing, centers were available in 20 different locations across the United States. In the future, the company also wants to add international locations.
With the flexible block storage solutions from iDrive Compute, you can add or remove storage space with one click. Storage volumes can also be transferred between VPS instances, and multiple volumes can be attached to the same instance for added flexibility.
Interface and in action
To get started with iDrive Compute, you first need to create a new account. Please note that you need a business email address – personal addresses such as @ gmail.com or @ hotmail.com are not accepted.
Once you’re signed in, you’ll be taken to your account dashboard, which is intuitive and easy to navigate. Add new VPS instances using the Instances menu on the left side of the screen, select your desired distribution, and get started. Other management options include SSH keys, firewall, and user permissions.
IDrive Compute’s customer service is decent, but it has some shortcomings. Technical support is available by phone (6:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. PST, Monday through Friday), online ticket submission, email, and live chat.
We tested the live chat and got a response almost immediately. However, it’s worth noting that our questions weren’t answered very well. Instead, it seemed like we got a general copy and paste response, which is a little worrying.
In addition to the live support channels, there are various video tutorials and a detailed FAQ area. The video tutorials are excellent and cover various aspects of setting up and managing your VPS instance in an easy-to-understand way.
First of all, the iDrive Compute servers are located in modern data centers with all the expected security measures, including video surveillance around the clock and biometric access controls. Protect your server with a range of tools including a configurable firewall, SSH keys, and advanced user access controls.
In addition, iDrive Compute offers an advanced infrastructure to help you comply with various regulations, including HIPAA, SEC / FINRA, SOX and GDPR.
One of the leading alternatives to iDrive Compute is Google Compute Engine, which allows you to create powerful virtual machines based on Google’s cloud infrastructure. This platform offers extremely versatile solutions backed by the reliability and advanced capabilities of one of the world’s largest digital ecosystems.
Alternatively, you can go for a more sophisticated option like Hostwinds which has a range of VPS website hosting solutions. This is a great choice for those planning to host a website on their VPS server as it comes with a number of specialized management tools.
Although iDrive Compute is a newcomer to the cloud computing space, it offers an excellent range of VPS solutions. The prices are competitive and the flexibility and scalability offered are impressive, to say the least.
In addition, the platform offers excellent security integrations to help you comply with relevant laws and regulations. The customer service is also impressive, even if the telephone support is limited to US business hours.
All in all, we recommend using iDrive Compute if you are looking for an advanced enterprise-level cloud computing solution.
