Vi (Vodafone Idea) is one of the top players in the telecommunications landscape in India. The most recent merger between Vodafone and Idea puts it in third place in the market share of wireless customers, just behind big wigs like Airtel and Jio. Vodafone offers its subscribers both postpaid and prepaid services. Prepaid users have to pay in advance for data and call services, while postpaid users are billed at the end of each month. Vi subscribers can switch from prepaid to postpaid if they wish, with plans in the latter already available from Rs. 399

How to switch from Vi (Vodafone Idea) prepaid to postpaid

Before starting the process, it is important to note that the company will issue a new postpaid SIM card if you decide to switch. The verification will also be carried out by a Vi representative who will visit you at your address. They will ask for proof of ID and address and it is best to have your Aadhaar card ready as well. Vi will inform the user of the time the representative will come home to check your details and deliver the SIM card. It is important that you are home at the selected time.

  1. Download the Vi app on your iOS or Android phone. You can download the app from Google play or Appstore.

  2. Once downloaded, register in the app using the OTP method. Your top up plans, available credit and all other details are displayed on the app homepage.

  3. Click on that Upgrade to postpaid Option from the main horizontal scrolling menu just below your account details on the home page.

  4. If you click this option you will be redirected to Vi website You have to select the Vi postpaid tariff to which you want to switch.   5. Enter the PIN code to which the new postpaid SIM card should be delivered. If the SIM card can be delivered to this PIN code, the company will ask for more details such as your cell phone number and whether you want to switch to a new number for postpaid or stick with your existing number. Select the option you want

  6. The Vi app then asks for your address data for delivery of the new SIM card. Please be careful when filling out this information. Make sure you provide all the correct information as a Vi representative will come to the same address for verification.

  7. Click on Get OTP Complete Order. An OTP will arrive on your phone. Punch in the OTP and click Complete my order.

  8. Once the phone number has been verified through the OTP process, Vodafone will send a text message informing the user of the likely arrival of a Vi representative. The subscriber is advised to be home at this time.

  9. Vi informs that users must have their Aadhar card, voter ID, driver’s license and passport ready for verification. The representative visits the address you entered, checks your address and identity, clicks on a live image of you and delivers your new Vi postpaid SIM card.

  10. After reviewing the document, the transition will take place in a few hours. Vi notes that it should take about 24-48 hours for the postpaid SIM card to activate.
