Government pulls Twitter to show Leh is part of China

In a stern letter to Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, the government has expressed its strong disapproval of Twitter’s misrepresentation of the Indian map for depicting part of Leh, the largest district in the Union Territory of Ladakh, as part of China . The government has warned Twitter that any attempt by the microblogging platform to disregard the sovereignty and integrity of the country is completely unacceptable.

IT secretary Ajay Sawhney said in a strongly worded letter that such attempts not only bring Twitter into disrepute, but also raise questions about its neutrality and fairness as an intermediary. Twitter had shown the geographic location “Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, People’s Republic of China”.

In his letter, the IT secretary reminded Twitter that Leh is the headquarters of the Union Territory of Ladakh and that both Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir are integral and inalienable parts of India governed by the constitution of India. Ladakh was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir and gained union territory status on August 5 last year when the center scrapped the special status and divided it into two union territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

The government has asked Twitter to respect the sensitivities of Indian citizens and has also made it clear that any attempt by Twitter to disregard the sovereignty and integrity of India, which is also reflected in the maps, is completely unacceptable and illegal.

India and China got involved In a bitter stalemate along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) since May of this year, several rounds of negotiations have not yet led to a solution. The Chinese have refused to honor agreements to restore the status quo. India recently returned a Chinese soldier who had strayed across the Actual Control Line (LAC) into east Ladakh after the Chinese army received a request for the soldier’s whereabouts.
