Google is testing a function with which videos from TikTok and Instagram are combined in special carousels in the Google mobile app according to a report. When this feature is widespread, users don’t have to open individual apps to watch short videos as they can search and watch them in the Google app itself. The short video carousel was released a few months ago on Google Discover and is now reportedly pulling in videos from TikTok and Instagram as well.
According to a report A Google spokesperson confirmed from TechCrunch that the feature is being tested on cell phones and is currently a limited early-stage feature on the Google cell phone app and mobile website. It is unclear what search queries the feature will be available for.
As seen in a Tweet Google appeared to contain short videos from TikTok and Instagram from user Brian Free Life, while Free Life looked for the American football team Green Bay Packers.
The report goes on to say that clicking the Instagram and TikTok videos on the short videos carousel will take users to the web version of the social media platform rather than the mobile app, even if it’s installed on the phone. This can mean that by implementing this feature, users can watch videos without having to switch apps. Clicking the back arrow allows users to return to the search results that lead them to the video, the report says.
The feature hasn’t been rolled out to everyone and it just seems to be in testing stages at the moment. It is not clear how the feature will work in India, where TikTok has been banned by the government.
