Main features of Google One membership
Google One is a paid membership plan that gives users expanded storage benefits – including Google Drive, Gmail, and Google Photos. It also offers the ability to automatically backup your phone to make switching handsets easier, and it helps to easily connect with experts to better handle complaints. It also provides access to Google Store Rewards and Google Play Credits. Users can share their Google One plan with up to five family members and get extended free trials for services like YouTube Premium.
Unlimited Google Photos storage until 2021
Recently, Google announced that it would end the free unlimited storage benefit in Google Photos and charge the storage space your photos and videos use for the 15GB quota. The new change will take effect on June 1, 2021. This move is meant to help convince more people to get a paid Google One subscription.
The company mentions that photos or videos that you uploaded in “high quality” (not original quality) before June 1st do not count towards the 15GB limit. Thus, the change will take effect for uploads that take place after June 1st. In addition, old Pixel phone users will be exempt from the latest change and will still be able to upload their photos and videos in “high quality” from their devices after June 1st. However, unlike in the past, they cannot access unlimited storage space for their content in the original file size either. It has been confirmed that future Pixel phones will not offer unlimited storage benefits.
Google One offers paid editing tools in Google Photos
In Photos, Google is also reportedly adding several paid editing tools for Google One paid subscribers. For example, it offers Google One members a paid color pop feature that allows them to apply the filter to any photo – even without depth information. Currently, the feature is only available for free for photos with depth information.
VPN service for Google One premium subscribers
Last month, Google also launched a VPN service for certain Google One subscribers. Google One’s VPN is only available on plans 2TB and above. A virtual private network (VPN) is designed for safe Internet use and is used by individuals to access blocked websites. With its VPN app, Google adds secure encryption to a phone’s online traffic, regardless of which app or browser the user is using. The service was originally launched for Android users in the US, but is set to expand to other countries as well as iOS, Windows and macOS in the coming months.
