Ghost of Tsushima sells 5 million copies and sets a new PS4 record

Ghost of Tsushima has a new PlayStation record. The Kurosawa-inspired open-world samurai game from infamous developer Sucker Punch is the fastest-selling new intellectual property (IP) for PlayStation Studios. More than 5 million copies have been sold since its July release on PlayStation 4, PlayStation Worldwide, studio manager Hermen Hulst has revealed. It beat the PS4 game Horizon Zero Dawn from Guerilla Games.

Ghost of Tsushima Review: A Kurosawa Samurai Movie You Can Play

In a tweet late Thursday, Hulst wrote:: [Ghost of Tsushima] is our fastest-selling original first-party PS4 game, with sales exceeding 5 million copies since its debut in July. What an incredible achievement by [Sucker Punch Productions]! Sucker Punch’s official Twitter account Hulst and Retweeted added: “We are thrilled and absolutely thrilled about the support! Thanks to everyone who played [Ghost of Tsushima]! ”

The keyword here is “Original” as there are other PlayStation Studios titles that do better than Ghost of Tsushima. Marvel’s Spider-Man sold 3.3 million Units in the first three days alone, but this is not an original title as the IP is of course Marvel’s. The Last of Us Part II, which was released a month before Ghost of Tsushima, was sold 4 million Copies in first three days, but is not considered an original title as it is a continuation of an established property.

Horizon Zero Dawn was its closest competitor to date after it was sold 2.6 million Copies in the first two weeks and up to 3.4 million Units total in less than four months, at the same window as Ghost of Tsushima, which has been out for a little less than four months.

After launch, Sucker Punch made a free co-op multiplayer mode in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends and a free 60 fps update available for the recently launched PlayStation 5. A sequel to Ghost of Tsushima is said to be in development, given Sucker Punch has new job openings for writers with knowledge of feudal Japan.
