Firefox update aims to make the browser for M1 Macs much faster

Mozilla Firefox version 84.0 has been released, which includes native support for the new Mac models with Apple’s M1 chip. The release notes state that Firefox for macOS devices starts 2.5 times faster and web apps with Firefox version 84.0 are twice as fast. The update includes WebRender for MacOS Big Sur, Windows devices with Intel Gen 6 GPUs, Intel laptops with Windows 7 and 8, and Android users of the Mali-G GPU series.

The Release Notes According to Firefox version 84.0, the update with the M1 chip brings dramatic performance improvements for Apple Silicon Macs compared to the non-native build in Firefox version 83.0. Firefox version 84.0 is also the last version to support Adobe Flash.

Firefox version 84.0 for Android gives users the ability to view their open tabs side by side in a grid view changelog. To switch from list to grid view, open the tab drawer by clicking the number next to the address bar that tells you how many tabs you have open. Then click on the three-point menu bar in the tab bar. Select Tab Settings, switch to Tab View and choose between List and Grid View.

WebRender for Android offers smoother animation and scrolling functions, according to Mozilla. The release notes say that Firefox is now using more modern techniques to allocate shared memory on Linux, improve performance, and increase compatibility with Docker. Mozilla will also be shipping an accelerated rendering pipeline for Linux / GNOME / X11 users for the first time.

For developers, the Firefox v84 network window can handle unexpected crashes and render debugging details such as an associated stack trace in the updated version of Firefox. Users can also file a bug report by clicking the link available to improve the stability of the tool. The release notes mention that the Accessibility window now has an option to display items in their tab order.

MacOS users running on Apple Silicon systems who do not have the Rosetta system software may still encounter playback errors with encrypted content. MacOS users running Cylance antivirus software may find that their Firefox installation is getting corrupted because it is flagged as malware.
