Facebook is to hold an emergency meeting to settle the content of the US elections

Facebook could take immediate measures to regulate viral content in the event of election conflict and civil unrest in the United States, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing sources. According to the report, Facebook wants to calm the potential violence with tools specially developed for so-called vulnerable countries. The tools that have already been used in Myanmar and Sri Lanka make it possible to contain the spread of the virus content and lower the threshold for identifying potentially inflammatory sites.

“We have worked for years to make safer and more secure elections … We have learned lessons from previous elections, hired experts, and put together new teams with experience in different areas to prepare for different scenarios,” said Andy Stone, spokesman for Facebook from the newspaper than to say.

Facebook will only implement such measures in the event of a critical situation that could lead to election-related violence, the report said. When the company employs these tools, the information millions of Americans receive will be transformed.

The report also states that this plan has been criticized by some members of the Facebook team and representatives of the Republican and Democratic parties, who believe that implementing measures to regulate content will hamper political discussion.

The US presidential election, in which US President Donald Trump will run against Democratic candidate Joe Biden, is scheduled for November 3rd. Early voting has already started in some states.
