One minute review
Eve is a brand that has existed since 2014 and built a reputation for making high quality smart home devices that are only HomeKit supported. From the best home surveillance cameras and other security devices like motion sensors to the best smart lights, Eve has a range of gadgets to automate your home.
Eve Energy is a new version of the brand’s single socket smart plug that connects to the internet to ensure you can control the device plugged into the plug through the app or Siri. It also monitors the power consumption of the device connected to it.
However, this new version uses Thread’s smart home technology to connect the plug to the internet rather than Wi-Fi, which improves the stability of the connection and puts an end to the unresponsive smart home devices. Threaded devices create a mesh network that all of those devices can use instead of a single Wi-Fi connection between the devices and the Internet. This means that if a particular device loses its connection, other threaded devices can share their connection so that it becomes unresponsive.
With the Eve app, you can turn the smart plug on or off and set schedules for when it should turn on or off automatically. The energy consumption and the total costs can of course be viewed if you provide specific information from the energy supplier. You can even control the Smart Plug via the Home app on iPhones and iPads. Note, however, that if you want to control the smart plug when you are away, you will need a HomePod Mini or Apple TV 4K in your home to act as a smart home hub.
For those closely connected to the Apple ecosystem or using HomeKit to power their smart home, the Eve Energy is the best smart plug you can buy right now.
Eve Energy price and availability
- List price: $ 39.95 / £ 34.95 / AU $ 85
The Eve Energy Smart Plug costs $ 39.95 / £ 34.95 / AU $ 85 and is available worldwide from the Apple Store and Amazon. It’s one of the most expensive smart plugs out there, but there is a chance it could be reduced on Amazon Prime Day 2021 so you can make significant savings.
- Single smart socket
- Manual power switch
- Bulky design
The Eve Energy Smart Plug, like the best smart plugs, is a simple, white device that plugs into an electrical outlet. It may be one of the bulkiest smart plugs we’ve tested, 2.8 ” / 7.1 cm deep, but the square design – if you’re in the UK or Australia (the US version is rectangular in shape ) – this ensures that it does not block access to other sockets.
There is a single socket on the front of the plug, while on the top of the smart plug there is a power button and an LED that glows green when switched on. On the left is a QR code with which the Smart Plug can be easily set up in both the Eve and the Apple Home app.
As mentioned earlier, the Smart Plug uses Thread technology instead of Wi-Fi to connect to the internet. If you don’t have a thread border router (a HomePod Mini or Apple TV 4K 2021) the connector uses Bluetooth to connect to the Eve or Apple Home app. However, this means that the Eve Energy Smart Plug cannot be controlled when you are not at home.
- Extremely easy to set up
- Built-in thread technology
- Requires Apple TV or HomePod control from outside the home
Like all devices with HomeKit support, the Eve Energy Smart Plug is very easy to set up, either via the Eve app or the Apple Home app. If you select Add Accessories, you will be asked to scan the QR code, which can also be found in the quick start guide and on the side of the smart plug itself. The app then does all of the hard work and connects the device to your Wi-Fi network.
Now you can assign the smart plug to a specific room or a specific device group and control the plug with your voice or your smartphone. During the test, we noticed that the plug was immediately turned on and off via the app or Siri, and made a reassuring click in the process.
We were disappointed to learn that you would need an Apple TV 4K or HomePod Mini to control the smart plug when you are not at home. In addition, there is no Away mode that switches the plug on or off at random times to simulate the occupancy during your absence, as offered by some TP-Link plugs such as the KP-105.
- power consumption
- HomeKit integration
- Set schedules through the Eve app
Both the Eve app and Apple’s home app, which can be used thanks to HomeKit integration, are easy to use, making controlling the smart home plug child’s play, no matter which app you choose. If you assign the Smart Plug to a set room, it will be displayed on this tab; Otherwise, you’ll find it on the main home screen of both apps – just tap it to toggle it on or off. Both apps also have an automation tab from which you can create scenes that control multiple smart home devices at the same time.
If you want to set schedules for turning the smart plug on and off or want to see how much energy the plug uses and how much it costs, you can do so through the Eve app. However, as already mentioned, there is no away mode to simulate presence by switching the plug on and off at random.
Should I buy the Eve Energy Smart Plug?
Buy it when …
You want a HomeKit-enabled smart plug
Eve Energy is one of the few smart plugs that support HomeKit. If you use the Apple ecosystem for your smart home, then this smart plug is the ideal purchase.
You want a smart plug that is easy to set up
The QR code on the side of the Eve Energy Smart Plug makes setup extremely easy and we love that you can use the Apple Home app instead of downloading a second app. If simplicity is a priority then this is the smart plug for you.
You want energy monitoring
Eve Energy can track the kilowatts consumed per hour and the monetary cost of the device it is connected to, making it a great buy for those who want to keep track of their energy usage
Don’t buy it if …
You want Alexa or Google Assistant assistance
The Eve Energy Smart Plug only supports HomeKit. So if you want a device that works with Alexa or Google Assistant, this model is best avoided.
You’re on a tight budget
Smart plugs are certainly not the most expensive devices out there, but at $ 39.95 / £ 34.95 / A $ 85, the Eve Energy Smart Plug is the most expensive device we tested. If you’re on a tight budget, consider brands like Amazon or TP-Link instead.
You want a plug to simulate that you are at home
There’s no out of office mode here that simulates you’re at home by turning connected devices on and off at random times to deter intruders. If that’s one of the reasons to buy a smart plug, consider a model like TP-Link’s HS110 instead.
