This latest version of prime95 has been optimized for the new AVX instruction set from Intel. Owners of Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 2xxx and 3xxx) will experience a significant performance boost. Any modern PC with Windows, Mac OS X, Linux or FreeBSD can participate.
How it works:
This page describes what you need to take part in GIMPS and how it works on your computer. This page is for those with Intel Compatible PCs, although in many cases UNIX and Mac users can also participate.
In short, you need:
- A relatively modern computer – although very old computers can still be useful in helping other computers find prime numbers.
- Your computer is turned on and off more often – at least most of the time – than it does during vacations, vacations, etc.
- Time and Patience – Testing a Prime can take weeks on even the fastest computers and months on the very old.
- An Internet connection is available at least every two months – more often is preferred, weekly or daily is ideal.
GIMPS requires a modern PC that is turned on most of the time. The program runs with the lowest possible priority. You shouldn’t see any impact on your system’s performance. The program requires approximately 32 MB of memory and approximately 50 MB of space. WARNING: Running the program continuously will use about 40 watts of extra power, about the same as an energy-saving compact fluorescent lamp. Your electricity bill will only increase slightly.

Setup instructions for new users:
Joining GIMPS is usually as simple as downloading and running the program, answering a few questions, and the program does the rest. There are cash prizes for discovering a new Mersenne Prime!
- If you haven’t, create your User ID. It is optional but required to review your account information, computer status, performance statistics and assign computers to your user ID.
- Download the appropriate free program for your operating system
- Create a directory and uncompress the file you just downloaded. Windows 7, Vista and XP have built-in unzip functions. Other Windows users can choose from a variety of decompression programs. We use 7-zip. Linux and FreeBSD users should use the standard tar and gzip decompression utilities.
- Start the program! (Linux and FreeBSD users should run the program from the command line with a -m switch, ie “./mprime -m”). Enter your optional user ID that was created on the website in step 1 and optionally name your computer. We recommend Windows users choose Options, Start at boot or Start at logon.
That’s all you have to do! The program contacts a central server called PrimeNet to do some work. Usually the program and PrimeNet know which work is best to assign, but it’s up to you!
You can manage your account and computers on your user IDs Account page. As soon as you have completed a work unit, you can follow your ranking on the Competition statistics pages The server is updated every hour (further statistics can be found under Top producers in the menu on the left). You can monitor the progress of each computer and even control the requested work orders remotely using your user IDs CPUs side!
Linux and FreeBSD versions can also be set up to run every time you restart your computer. Ask for help from the Mersenne Forum.

- Thanks to Mihai Preda, the P-1 probability calculator has been improved. This change results in a lower optimal B1 value and a higher optimal B2 value.
