Chris Pine in conversation with Star in Dungeons & Dragons Movie: Reports

Chris Pine could do a Dungeons and Dragons movie. The 1984 Star Trek and Wonder Woman reportedly is in talks to be part of a big budget adaptation of the fantasy RPG. Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, director of the action comedy film Game Night 2018 with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams, write and direct Dungeons. Paramount Pictures and Hasbro’s own eOne – Hasbro owns the rights to Dungeons & Dragons – are producing the film, with the latter distributing it in the UK and Canada and the former everywhere else.

Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter brought news of Pine’s potential involvement in Dungeons & Dragons, which has been in the works for some time. It was originally at Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema, with Ansel Elgort set to play but it ended in a legal dispute over property rights. Dungeons then ended up at Paramount, first with The Lego Batman film director Chris McKay in front of the studio brought in Goldstein and Daley as replacements after writing Spider-Man: Homecoming. It seems to be moving forward now.

This is not the first film adaptation of Dungeons & Dragons. Justin Whalin, Marlon Wayans and Jeremy Irons were involved Dungeons (2000) who emerged as a critical and commercial dud. Nevertheless, two sequels followed in Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of the Dragon God (2005) and Dungeons & Dragons 3: The Book of Vile Darkness (2012). But they didn’t involve any of the original actors (except Bruce Payne in “Wrath of the Dragon God”) and didn’t even make it to theaters properly (Wrath of the Dragon God) or at all (Book of Abominable Darkness).

Paramount and Hasbro will hope this fourth attempt turns out to be better than any other. That they managed to get Pine’s interest is a good sign. Dungeons According to the deadline, filming should start in the Northern Irish capital Belfast in the first quarter of 2021. Another fantasy epic, Game of Thrones, also spent all eight seasons there.

Dungeons to open in cinemas worldwide on May 27, 2022.
