BMW iX Electric SUV unveiled, slated to launch in the US in early 2022

German luxury automaker BMW unveiled an electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) called BMW iX on Wednesday, which is slated to go on sale in the United States in early 2022 to compete with Tesla and other competitors.

BMW said the iX should have a range of 480 kilometers. This is less than the estimated range of the Tesla Model X Long Range, which is rated 597 kilometers in the US. BMW said drivers could reach a range of 120 kilometers in ten minutes at a fast charging station.

BMW said the iX would be comparable in size to the current BMW X5 SUV. The dashboard is a curved screen.

The electric iX will enter a rapidly growing field of battery-powered SUVs aimed at wealthy customers.

The Tesla Model X already faces competition from Chinese startup Nio, and General Motors’ Cadillac brand recently unveiled a midsize electric SUV called Lyriq, which is expected to hit the market in 2022. Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen from Daimler have electric premium models in the works.

Ford Motor’s Mustang Mach-E aspires to part of the performance enthusiast market that BMW defined decades ago. Ford said Monday it intended to add a second model based on the foundations of the Mach-E.
