2020 is the year that BMax, a relative newcomer to the Chinese PC scene, quickly gained ground and two of its products we tested, the BMax Y11 convertible 11.6 inch laptop and the Bmax B1 Thin Client Mini-PC, stood out thanks to some solid USPs. This time around, we’re testing the BMax Y13 Pro, a convertible 2-in-1 laptop aimed at a slightly different audience. one who wants to use Windows 10 Pro, a business oriented operating system.

Design and functions
Lenovo gave us the first yoga more than eight years ago. Since then, this elegant design has been the inspiration for countless products, including the BMax Y13 Pro. With two hinges, the screen can be rotated 360 degrees to turn the laptop into a tablet.
At 308 × 208 × 14.7 mm, it is only slightly thicker than 150 A4 sheets of paper (a little less than a third of a ream). It weighs 1.25 kg and is not as light as the 14-inch weight under 1 kg LG Gram 14 2-in-1 convertible laptop The latter costs three times as much as the BMax candidate.
The Y13 Pro exudes quality thanks to a metal housing made of aluminum alloy, which has adopted the popular room gray color scheme and a surface made of brushed metal. The base has curves in all the right places and is rightly shy of tapering the edges to make it look thinner. As such, it follows in the footsteps of the MacBook correct.
There are no vents to facilitate airflow and that’s due to the low power dissipation of the Intel processor used by the Bmax Y13 Pro. The laptop acts like a huge heat sink to dissipate the heat. On the base of the laptop there is a flap in which there is a removable M.2 SSD.
The display is a bit like a fingerprint magnet, as BMax went for a glossy glass. It is a Full HD IPS touchscreen model with a bezel of only 5 mm on both sides. The webcam is on the upper edge, while the lower edge – which is closer to the keyboard – is much thicker and acts as a “retaining edge”.
While using a 24W (12V2A) power adapter that plugs into a tiny proprietary barrel connector, owners can plug in a compatible laptop charger or charger Laptop power bank into a Type-C port on the left side of the device. On the right side there is an audio jack, a microSD card slot and another Type-C connection as well as the power switch.

Let’s start with the biggest surprise. The use of an Intel Core m5-6Y54 processor, a dual-core model that was launched back in 2015 and was selected because of its “low power consumption” of 4.5W, according to a BMax spokesman. However, LPDDR4 is not supported, only older (and more power hungry) LPDDR3 and the HD Graphics 515 video subsystem are in full swing.
The rest of the spec, however, is far more appealing: 8GB of system memory, a 256GB SATA SSD from Foresee, a 13.3-inch 1080p 10-point touchscreen IPS LCD with full lamination technology, and – no surprise – Intel’s ubiquitous Wireless-AC 3165 radio chip that provides Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2.
Performance and commitment
The Core m processor is the Y13 Pro’s Achilles heel. We said it there. Swap it out for something new and watch it fly with distinction. We can’t wait to see a quad-core AMD Ryzen processor in this form factor. Keep in mind that this laptop uses parts that are four years or older, which means it lacks newer features like LPDDR4 or a faster PCIe NVMe SSD. In short, compared to the N4120, the Core M is faster for single core, but much slower for multi-core tasks.

The colors are bright and vibrant, as you would expect from an IPS display with excellent viewing angles. A highly reflective display means outdoor use can be a problem. The 2-cell battery with 36.5 Whr only lasted 3 hours 13 minutes in our exhausting YouTube playback video, which is quite disappointing. The backlit keyboard has larger than average keys with slightly concave surfaces. We love the large Esc key and the generously proportioned arrow keys with only one function. The keyboard has a shorter travel length compared to premium laptops, but is still full of personality and responsive enough for any enthusiastic typist.
The touchpad was a straightforward model with no physical buttons, but with a decent interface and plenty of feedback.
Buy it when
You are looking for a thin and light 2-in-1 convertible laptop. The Y13 Pro is extremely portable and great fun. It uses the form factor that makes up the original Lenovo Ideapad Yoga such an iconic laptop design.
You’re looking for an affordable laptop with first-class build quality. Thanks to the use of metal (aluminum alloy) through and through and a distinctive, restrained color scheme, the convertible notebook from BMax differs from more noticeable, less chic competitors.
You want a quiet laptop. It doesn’t have fans to keep it cool, so it runs quietly; The downside, however, is that it can be quite warm under load.
You want Windows 10 Pro on a budget. This is one of the cheapest laptops on the market right now with Microsoft’s business operating system installed.
Don’t buy it, though
You want to work all day. With just under 200 minutes, the Y13 Pro has a shockingly low battery life due to its battery capacity of 36.5 Whr. Unfortunately, you will likely have to pay more, much more, to get something better, although that may depend on when you buy.
You want the best value for money. On paper, the Y13, another BMax convertible, is a much better option. It has an Intel Celeron N4120 processor and Bluetooth 5.0 plus costs significantly less and has identical functions and an identical housing. Thanks to its four physical cores and a newer graphics subsystem, the N4120 is faster than the Core M.
You want to use full-size USB ports. It only has two Type-C USB ports, one of which is for data only.
