Arm launches new Cortex-A78C CPU that could power laptops

Arm has announced a new CPU variant that can be seen in laptop SoCs. The Arm Cortex-A78C is a variant of the high-end Cortex-A78 that will power the next generation of flagship smartphones. The company launched the Cortex-A78 in May of this year as its highest-quality Cortex-A CPU, which reportedly offers a sustained 20 percent increase in performance and a 50 percent increase in energy savings over last year’s Cortex-A77. While Cortex-A78 cores are almost exclusively intended for smartphones, according to Arm, the new Cortex-A78C will power the next generation of devices for on the go, e.g. B. Always active laptops.

Arm made the announcement through a company blog entryThis showed that the new Cortex-A78C will support up to 8 large CPU core clusters for “more homogeneous multi-big-core computing”. In comparison, the high-end Cortex-A78 from Arm, which is expected to be part of the SoCs from Snapdragon 875 and Samsung Exynos 1080 from Qualcomm, supports 4 large CPU cores and 4 small CPU cores (Cortex-A55) in the proprietary DynamIQ arrangement of arm.

The company says the new, more flexible eight-core configuration of the Cortex-A78C can increase multithreaded performance to improve gaming and productivity. Like the Cortex-A78, its new C variant is also compatible with the recently introduced Mali-G78 GPU. The new CPU also increases the L3 cache memory to 8 MB, which could lead to an increase in performance, especially when working with large amounts of data.

According to Arm, the new Cortex-A78C-CPU improves data and device security and the PAC (Pointer Authentication Code) can significantly reduce exploits that allow attackers to take over the software control flow. The company says it will help ensure data security even when installing third-party applications.

Arm hasn’t made it clear whether its new Cortex-A78C CPU will soon be part of SoCs that power laptops or mobile gaming devices. In this case, it will be interesting to see how the Cortex-A78C can measure up to the performance of Intel processor cores on laptop processors.
