Refill the valve Steam’s Best of 2020 list are the usual suspects like Destiny 2, Counter-Strike, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Terraria, but there are a surprising number of newcomers like Among Us and Cyberpunk 2077 that were released just a few weeks ago.
Like every clockwork, Valve publishes its list of the most played games of the year on Steam – sorted by the number of simultaneous players in each game.
Each of these games had over 200,000 concurrent players at their peak, with Cyberpunk 2077 hitting a record high of 1,054,388 players on December 12th.
While you can surely check out the lists of the best games of the year (including our list of games of 2020) to find out what was new and hot in 2020, bestseller lists like the one that Steam offers each year give us the clearest picture of what gamers have bought and played in the past few months.

Sales data is interesting in itself, but it can give us a bigger picture. For example, the number of simultaneous players is a good indicator of active online communities. The more active an online community, the easier it will be to find multiplayer matches.
If you look at the list, all but one of the games were released more than a year ago – while this is a list of the most played games of 2020, most of the time players are still playing older games.
That said, it’s encouraging to see older games like Grand Theft Auto 5 continue to be popular seven years after it was first released thanks to updates and new content from Grand Theft Auto Online, offering one to gamers who can’t necessarily afford every new version good value for money week.
In short, if you need something new to play with and you want it to take a while, Steam’s most popular list is a good place to look around.
