Amazon Signs deal to take over popular podcast producer Wondery

Amazon announced on Wednesday that it has signed a deal to acquire successful podcast production company Wondery, stepping up efforts by the US tech giant to round off its music platform offerings.

Wondery, which plays popular podcasts like Dirty John, Dr. Death and The Shrink Next Door will be integrated with Amazon Music, which is stepping up its efforts to compete with rivals such as Spotify and has been offering podcasts since earlier this year.

“Together with Wondery, we will continue to stream more customers as we expand the choices and make sure we are a destination for our customers to find, discover and listen to the creators and artists they love,” said the music team from Amazon in one blog entry.

“Wondery is an innovative podcast publisher with a track record of creating and producing great podcasts that keep listeners entertained and educated.”

The terms of the deal were not disclosed, but reports earlier this month said Wondery was seeking $ 300 million (approximately rupees 2,200).

The deal, which has not yet been finalized, will allow Amazon Music subscribers to listen to Wondery podcasts through a variety of providers, according to a statement from Amazon.

Industry tracker Podtrac ranked Wondery the fourth most popular podcast publisher in the US in November. Just over 9 million people tune into the audio programs it hosts.

Podcasts have become more and more popular in recent years. People hear compelling real or scripted stories as well as interviews.

The move comes as Amazon continues to be scrutinized by antitrust authorities for its growing dominance in key sectors of the economy as it expands into retail and streaming media.
