Amazon has announced that it will add Marathi language support to its e-commerce platform after a controversy erupted over the need for language support for customers in Maharashtra. In a tweet, Amazon announced that work on introducing the “Marathi shopping experience” had already begun and that the registration of sellers in the language would also be introduced shortly. The e-commerce giant has also announced that it will add more languages to improve the customer and seller experience on the platform.
Amazon shared one too Screenshot with the tweet to suggest that Marathi language support would go live on its platform soon. The request to add the support was made by Raj Thackerays Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), who wrote an open letter to Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos asking for it. The MNS had also threatened agitation against Amazon if the language was not added to the app and website for customers in Maharashtra.
“We have no intention of getting into a lawsuit with Amazon, but as Maharashtrians we can go to any extent for our mother tongue. The excitement on social media platforms (#NoMarathi_No Amazon) is only the tip of the iceberg, “says MNS boss Akhil Chitre in the letter.

An Amazon warehouse in Punes Kondhwa was destroyed earlier today, allegedly by MNS workers over a notice a Mumbai court sent its boss Raj Thackery following Amazon’s complaint, an ANI report said. According to a report The Print allegedly also attacked Amazon offices and warehouses in the Chandivli areas of Mumbai over demand.
