Amazon is extending the “Work from Home” option through June 30 for employees worldwide

On Tuesday, Amazon announced to employees whose work can be done from home that they can do so by June and extended the deadline to return to office due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Employees working in a role that can be effectively done from home can do so until June 30, 2021,” an Amazon spokeswoman said in a statement emailed Tuesday, adding that the guidelines are applicable worldwide.

Amazon had previously approved this option until January.

The development comes less than three weeks after the world’s largest online retailer announced that more than 19,000 of its US front-line workers infected the coronavirus this year.

Some employees, elected officials and unions have said in recent months that Amazon is putting employee health at risk by keeping warehouses open during the pandemic.

“We have invested considerable funds and resources in protecting those who choose to get to the office safely through physical distancing, thorough cleaning, temperature checks, and the provision of face covers and hand sanitisers,” the Amazon spokeswoman said Tuesday .

In May, Twitter became the first major tech company to give employees who can work remotely the opportunity to do so indefinitely.

Other tech giants have expanded the option of working from home for their employees. Microsoft announced earlier this month that most employees can work remotely for up to half their weekly working hours.

Facebook had announced that it would allow its employees to work from home until July next year, while Google had extended remote working hours for employees who don’t have to be in the office until June.
