Adobe urges users to uninstall Flash before shutting down in January

Adobe has released the final planned update for its Flash Player and announced that it will block Flash content from running on January 12, 2021. The company has also recommended that users uninstall Flash Player before support ends on December 31. The new update will be released months after Microsoft announced that it would end support for Adobe Flash Player on Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer by the end of 2020. In addition to Microsoft’s browsers, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox will also say goodbye to Adobe Flash Player, which was once a popular solution for running multimedia content on the web.

“Adobe will stop supporting Flash Player after December 31, 2020, and Adobe will block Flash content from running in Flash Player starting January 12, 2021. Adobe strongly recommends that all users uninstall Flash Player immediately to protect their systems, ”the company said wrote in the release notes for the final version of Flash Player.

Ultimately, by blocking content, Adobe prevents users from accessing Flash content in their web browsers.

As clarified For ZDNet, the mechanism to completely shut down Flash Player is not part of the latest update and will be available for some time – as part of previous versions. This means that even if you don’t install the final update, you won’t be able to skip the end of Flash Player’s life. However, the new update includes a changed language that prompts users to uninstall Flash Player before it stops working.

Adobe announced the retirement of its Flash Player in July 2017. The company made this decision in cooperation with Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Mozilla. It had also started encouraging developers to switch to modern programming standards and newer software technologies to make migration easier.

Flash Player was introduced in January 1996 and brought extensive applications to the web world. This allowed early internet users to play games and run animation in their web browsers. However, with the increasing adoption of HTML5, it lost its charm. Developers have also started using JavaScript over Flash to gain newer experience.

Aside from enhancing HTML5 and JavaScript, Adobe Flash Player has been challenged to maintain its leadership position due to a number of serious security issues and recent shortcomings. Companies like Google and Microsoft had to fix some security flaws from the start to keep their users safe.

Adobe has one Flash Player EOL general information page to help users uninstall Flash Player from their systems. The company also thanked all the customers and developers who have made the software so successful in the past.

“We pride ourselves on the fact that Flash played a key role in the development of animation, interactivity, audio and video web content. We are excited to lead the next era of digital experiences, ”said the company.
